Getting Organised for Crafts.

Crafts are a great way to spend time with our children and I want to give you a few ideas on getting organised for the crafts we will be doing at Heather Mary Music. The process of creating something together will also help to build your child’s self-esteem as well as co-ordination and the opportunity to talk together as you create something is invaluable.
Organisation is the key to being ready and able to do the crafts with your kids. I’m a fairly organised person and my family have often said that I’m a bit of a hoarder…but don’t think of me like the hoarders you see on those ghastly TV programmes who live in mountains of mess. I like to have things labelled and in places that are easily accessible. I keep boxes of ‘interesting & crafty’ things in my spare cupboard in my office now, ready to get out when my grandchildren come to stay or when I am taking classes. When my children were young we had a ‘family room’ with good shelving and our craft things were kept in boxes and tins in there. I would often find my kids quietly creating things in that room, paper, scissors, stickers, old magazines and all-sorts spread on the floor and on the low tables we had in there, all around the family room….just what it was made for. You will need to work out what works best for you.

  1.  Have a plastic box or similar ready to fill up with these crafty re-creatable products. I use 40 litre plastic boxes with a lids and apple boxes which are easily stored in my cupboard.  And then I have plastic re-sealable plastic bags in the boxes with different articles in them as well as some smaller boxes, either chocolate cardboard boxes or plastic containers, I even use some old metal tins that held biscuits and other treats in.
  2. Start collecting the stuff you used to throw away

Here’s a list of things to start collecting:

Egg cartons
Pieces of ribbon
String
Some plastic soda bottles
Tape-coloured and sellotape

Small boxes from the pantry-tea, cornflour etc

Rubber bands
Wrapping paper offcuts
Old cereal boxes or other similar items
Coloured paper
Coloured cardboard
Buttons
Ribbons & ties off bunches of flowers you get given J
Cellophane & wrapping off flowers you’ve received (or anyone else)
Glitter
Texters/felt-tip pens

Old baking dishes

Your parents or friends may be into crafts too and ask them to keep little odds ‘n ends for you as well.
I always have scissors-both adult and junior ones on hand, and glue/paste.
Paste can be made with flour and water so it doesn’t need to be expensive.
And often I pick up foam or felt or other handcraft things in the bargain bins at craft stores and pop them in my craft box. They will always come in handy for something crafty.
